Lawyers Behind a Mask

The kingdom’s first generation of female lawyers is providing women with access to the law.

I honestly would not trust or hire a lawyer I could not see. I really doubt anyone else would feel differently. How much are you really willing to risk of your own life, business or safety just to be politically correct?

Anger Towards Spiders

I never understand the anger management issues with spiders. I’ve got one living on the ceiling of my bedroom. He/ she has been there all winter. I’ll catch him/her and dump them outside now that it’s spring.

I know people don’t like spiders. But to feel all this anger towards them is a bit creepy and very unjustified.

No, I don’t pick them up and I don’t choose to keep them around as pets. But, I’m not out to get them either.

Are you having some sort of predator moment? Fearing you will have to share food sources with the spider? They eat bugs, if you’ve sunk that low… reconsider.

Are you afraid of a venomous spider? There are few of them in North America. Relax, the spider isn’t out to eat you. It would be happy to avoid you entirely. You’re not nearly crunchy enough.

Designer Shelters for Cities’ Stray Cats

Designer Shelters for Cities’ Stray Cats – Technology – The Atlantic Cities.

“It’s estimated that there are over 10,000 stray cats in New York City. But with myriad other human problems, issues like feral cats tend to fall by the city’s wayside. A recent competition organized by Architects for Animals asked the city’s designers to address the burgeoning problem by designing a prototype cat shelter that could be replicated throughout the five boroughs.”

A nice thing for the cats. I wonder what will keep other creatures from using them. If the cats get in there rodents will stay away. But it may take awhile before the cats get into them. I had a cat who would never go inside the shelter I built for her outside, stubborn, tough cat!

Urbanology

From BMW Guggenheim Lab: Urbanology Starts August 3rd, 2011.

Urbanology is a large group game that will take place in the BMW Guggenheim Lab and online, throughout the Lab’s New York run, to address issues that arise when cities grow and inhabitants try to institute lasting change. In this unusual interactive installation, visitors role-play scenarios for city transformation and become advocates for issues such as education, housing, health care, infrastructure, and mobility as they build a city that matches their specific needs.

The game experience for Urbanology was developed by Local Projects, and the physical design was created by ZUS [Zones Urbaines Sensibles].

I Want Paper Coffee Cups

I have one of those tiny flies buzzing around me tonight. It’s too fast for me to kill. I must need more coffee if I am this slow.

Today you could have gotten a free coffee at Starbucks if you brought in a travel mug. I have a travel mug but it makes the coffee taste like plastic and it doesn’t fit in my purse. So it is really not very practical at all. I wonder if they would have served my coffee in the regular paper cup if I showed them the plastic travel mug first. Likely not as the whole point was to encourage people to bring their own cups versus continuing to use paper cups.
However, how green is it to bring your own mug really?
First, people don’t always wash their travel mugs in between coffee stops. The barista at the coffee shop usually rinses out the travel mug with a squirt of hot water. But, is that really enough to make it safe from bacteria and whatever else could be lurking in there? While being sick may turn you a shade of green it is not a good thing for the environment, in many ways.
A paper cup is easily recycled. At worst it will decompose in your compost if it doesn’t make it into the recycling bin with the other paper. A plastic cup can not be recycled, it will not compost and it will not go out with your recycling but will have to be put out with the unredeemable garbage.
If I have to haul a travel mug around with me I will need a bigger purse. Likely I need a bigger purse already as I am also expected to carry my own grocery/ shopping bags too. I don’t have a car to be my second purse or my socially and environmentally conscious beast of burden. I have to carry whatever I need with me on my shoulder all day, while running around from place to place and bus to bus. It may be good for the environment but it is not good for me. I don’t like hauling around cargo.
